Road Rage

Are you a road rager? South Africa has one of the highest levels of road rage in the World, with Gauteng accounting for 56% of road rage incidents.

It is better to seek professional help and sort out your road rage problem NOW before you land up on the wrong side of the law where you will be forced to sort it out for a much higher price. Whether or not you are stopped by the police and apprehended is not the issue, but more you recognising that you have a problem and are potentially dangerous to yourselves and others. You could land up getting hurt by another with whom you have engaged whilst in rage, or could lose control of your vehicle and have an accident. You are also putting your health at risk by raising your stress levels and putting a strain on your heart.

Road rage and aggressive driving go hand in hand. South Africans have a tendency to:

  • Drive aggressively
  • Be impatient and intolerant e.g. no one is to be in front of me
  • Have an “I can do what I want” attitude
  • Think they don’t need to obey the rules of the road
  • Be selfish e.g. not let anyone out
  • Overtake on the left
  • See speed limits as the minimum speed one should drive at
  • See taxis as a major source of anger

Unfortunately this has, as a result of poor law enforcement on the roads, become an entrenched culture where it is assumed that this is the way to drive, especially since everyone else is doing it and getting away with it.

Well, there are calm and polite drivers out there as well. There are those who do not engage in incidents with other motorists but choose to ignore or ‘let it go’. You can choose to deal with your aggressive or road rage approach to driving and become calmer, safer and less stressed. Additionally you don’t risk getting caught, fined or locked up.

Following a minor bumper-bashing in Louis Botha Avenue (Johannesburg) involving a taxi, the enraged 32 year old motorist shot the taxi driver in his mouth, who is now in a critical condition with massive injuries. The road rager is currently in jail facing a charge of attempted murder. This could have been prevented had the 32 year old sorted out his anger problem.

Other Rages

Raging is not limited to the Road, in our stressed society. We have come across the following:

  • Queue Rage
  • Trolley Rage
  • Car Park Rage
  • Cashier Rage
  • Airline Rage
  • Restaurant Rage
  • Partner Rage
  • Employee Rage

This list is by no means exhaustive. Rage is defined as anger that has gone ‘out of control’. It is abusive, dangerous and needs attention.

Please don’t ignore it and think it will correct itself and go away. It gets worse and can become a bad habit, if it isn’t already one. Seek professional help.
